How it works — and why it matters
3PLs range from asset-light freight brokerages to providers running warehouses, dedicated fleets, and entire transportation departments under contract. In the middle of every model is the same job: commit to a shipper's service outcome, then orchestrate carriers, appointments, documents, and payments to deliver it.
Because a 3PL fronts for many shippers and buys from many carriers, it is one of the most integration-hungry businesses in freight: tenders, statuses, and invoices flow in both directions across hundreds of trading partners, each with its own EDI or API requirements. How efficiently a 3PL exchanges that data largely sets its cost per load.
