Carrier Onboarding
The process of vetting, qualifying, and setting up a new carrier to haul freight — authority checks, insurance verification, EDI/API setup, and compliance documentation.
How it works — and why it matters
A typical onboarding flow pulls the carrier's FMCSA authority and safety data, verifies insurance certificates with the insurer or an insurance-monitoring service, collects W-9 and payment details, and executes a broker-carrier agreement — followed by whatever EDI or API connectivity setup is needed to start exchanging loads and statuses.
Onboarding speed is a competitive issue: a broker who can qualify and activate a new carrier in minutes wins capacity that a days-long paperwork process loses. It is also the first line of defense against fraud and double brokering, which is why automated identity and authority verification is increasingly standard.
