Geofencing
Using a virtual geographic boundary to automatically trigger status updates — such as arrival or departure — when a tracked vehicle crosses it.
How it works — and why it matters
A dispatcher or system draws a radius or polygon around a shipper's facility; when a truck's GPS position from its ELD or telematics unit crosses the boundary, the system records an arrival event automatically — and a departure event when it leaves. No driver input or check call is required.
Geofence events are the timestamps that settle detention disputes, fire automated EDI 214 status messages, and update ETAs for downstream stops. Because they come from the vehicle rather than a person, they are more consistent and more trusted than manually keyed arrival times — and both parties in a dispute can agree on them.
