Dwell Time
The time a truck spends at a facility between arrival and departure — loading, unloading, or waiting — and one of the strongest predictors of downstream lateness.
How it works — and why it matters
Dwell is measured from geofenced arrival to geofenced departure, and it varies enormously by facility: one receiver turns trucks in 45 minutes, another routinely holds them four hours. Because a truck sitting at a dock is burning both schedule and the driver's on-duty clock, long dwell at one stop regularly cascades into missed appointments at the next.
Historical dwell by facility is a core input to predictive ETAs — an arrival estimate that assumes every dock turns trucks instantly is wrong precisely where lateness is most likely. Dwell beyond the contractual free time becomes detention, which is why the same geofence timestamps that feed ETA models also settle detention invoices.
