Exception Management
An operating model where systems handle routine shipments automatically and people work only the loads flagged as needing intervention — at risk, delayed, or off plan.
How it works — and why it matters
In an exception-managed operation every active load is classified continuously: on-track loads get their status updates sent automatically, watch-list loads are monitored by the system, and at-risk loads surface to a dispatcher with a reason code — an HOS clock that won't make the appointment, dwell running long at the pickup, traffic on the remaining route. The dispatcher's attention goes where it changes an outcome.
The commercial logic is the ratio of loads managed per dispatcher: a floor that watches everything scales headcount with volume, while a floor that works exceptions scales with the exception rate. The prerequisite is classification the team can trust, which is why exception management depends on predictive ETAs built from the full operational picture rather than position alone.
